SAT Prep Plan: SAT Learning Topic - Passage-based Reading: Vocabulary Comprehension
Passage-based Reading: Vocabulary Comprehension
Description:
Passage-based reading questions not only test your ability to draw
conclusions from the material you read; they also test your
comprehension of words as they are used in the passages. Continuing to
build a strong vocabulary set thus will help you in this section of the
SAT. Strong vocabulary skills also help you develop an excellent response to the essay question.
There
are various ways for you to help your vocabulary to grow. Active
reading is an outstanding practice, in which you flag words you do not
know and look them up in a dictionary as you are reading.
Also,
the time-honored tradition of looking at vocabulary lists and
memorizing definitions can be very useful. However, take a realistic
approach to learning new words. Don't try to learn 500 words in an
afternoon, because it's not realistic. Instead, find discrete lists of
20-40 words and review them. Later, after you feel confident that you
have mastered the words in all your smaller lists, you can combine them
into a larger list for review.
