Improving Sentences: Punctuation
Description:
In questions that ask you to improve sentences, attention to proper
punctuation is important. Having a solid grasp of proper punctuation
is the foundation for developing sophisticated sentences and paragraphs.
Punctuation skills also will come in to play when you are writing
the essay.
For example, the following sentence improvement question centers on punctuation usage:
Being a vegetarian, and owed to the lack of vegetarian items on the menu; she decided to eat at a different restaurant.
A. Being a vegetarian, and owed to the lack of vegetarian items on the menu; she
B. Because she is a vegetarian, and there being a lack of menu items that are vegetarian, thus
C. There is a lack of vegetarian items on the menu, she is a vegetarian; thus
D. Because being vegetarian left a lack of items of the menu, she
E. Because of the lack of vegetarian items on the menu, she
The
correct answer is E. As it is written, the sentence misuses the
semi-colon and creates a sentence fragment (and also shows faulty
