SAT Prep Plan: SAT Tips

Tip of the Day 11

Plug it in

One of the best ways to solve SAT multiple-choice math problems is to work backwards from the answers provided, testing to see which lines up with the parameters of the question. This way, you can get math questions right without even knowing how to solive them!

Example: if 4(x-3) = 8, what is x?

a)1
b)3
c)4
d)5
e)7

Try c: 4(4-3) = 8?

Does 4(1) = 8? NO! So C is wrong, and can be eliminated.

Try d: 4(5-3) = 8?

Does 4(2) = 8? YES! Bingo, the answer is D!

This technique can get you through almost any SAT math problem.
