SAT Prep Plan: SAT Tips

Tip of the Day 2

Gear up for the Essay Portion

Before you ever sit down to write your SAT essay portion, it’s a good idea to prepare some good SAT essay-ready examples to use in your arguments. Since the essay prompts are usually very general, come up with a grab-bag of very general topics that you know enough about to be comfortable writing on. Your ready-made example could be the history of World War Two, aspects of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the story of Martin Luther King Jr.

You should write your essays using at least ONE good example to back up your thesis, though push for three good examples if you can. The best examples are those drawn from literature (novels, plays, etc.), history, art, philosophy, and other “academic” fields. Current events are less preferable as examples (and no references to 9/11), and personal observations/experiences are the weakest, but no matter what make sure you can back up your thesis with the best three examples as you can think of. Which is why you should think of them before you write your essay!
