SAT Prep Plan: SAT Tips

Tip of the Day 4

Best Guessing

Wrong answers cost you points, but blanks do too. Get comfortable with the process of guessing on the SAT —and learn to guess SMARTER.

Guessing smarter means eliminating answers that you’re reasonably certain can’t be right, then guessing among the answers that remain. If you can eliminate even one answer with some confidence, it’s worth taking the guess. Also, be sure to guess on any problem you’re stuck on if you’ve spent any time at all working on it. The only reason you should leave a question blank is to save time to solve a question you can answer correctly. Guess carefully throughout the test, but go ahead and guess wildly during last few seconds of a section, when there’s no time left to actually figure the questions out anyway. But don’t ever be afraid to guess.
